Pressure and Coping Mechanism- 7 Proven Tips

Pressure has been a concern for individuals at various stages of life. You could feel so motivated by it, but at some point, you become anxious. Pressure can lead to illness, fatigue, depression, and high blood pressure.

Introduction

Pressure can be defined as anything that causes stress or strain on a person or their life. It can appear in various forms. For example, there can be physical pressure, such as being told to lift a bag of rice or to carry large groceries from your car to the kitchen. More severe pressure may occur, such as experiencing an unexpected car accident on the way to work. Pressure may also be emotional, such as dealing with a sick child or having a heated argument with one’s spouse, both of which can distort one’s thoughts and day.

Can you imagine showing up at work and your supervisor just handing over about ten tasks that require a lot of effort and commitment, with a same-day deadline? That is so bizarre; as a result, you become overwhelmed, and your thoughts are everywhere, thereby affecting your behavior.

It could also take the form of feeling exhausted from pouring into everyone—friends, family, and even parents—but feeling so unheard, uncomfortable, and uncared for, which might also begin to affect one’s mental state and well-being.

Do you know the sad news? Provided we are alive, we will always face pressures. The more we grow in life, the more pressure we will experience. Every day comes with its challenges, and having to experience them is not entirely bad, as these pressures help us stretch ourselves. Sometimes, we really do not know what we are capable of until something comes our way. Then we brace ourselves, confront our fears, and suddenly find ourselves conquering them.

Although these trials or tasks are somewhat beneficial, they often take a heavy toll on our bodies, health, and overall well-being; hence, we need to take very strict measures to manage them.

 Handling Pressure as Individuals

Now is the time to manage our minds, souls, spirits, and bodies. This balance prevents mental and physical health issues, reduces unhealthy stress, and boosts energy. Below are ways to manage the impact of pressure on overall well-being.

Regular Exercise

I have personally experienced how working out helps manage pressure and provides great relief. Exercise could take the form of a brisk walk, a little jogging, or even cycling, and not necessarily going to the gym. Ever wondered why the percentage of kids who are so happy is a lot higher than that of adults? Kids value and enjoy moving their bodies through play, thus indirectly exercising.

Engaging in regular exercise helps release the feel-good hormone called endorphins, providing a cushion when tension or challenges come. It provides clarity, fosters concentration, boosts confidence, and gives us the spirit and strength to face the pressures that may come our way. It is recommended that everyone do as little as thirty (30) minutes of exercise daily to stay alive and well.

Maintain Mindfulness

Now you know that you cannot control everything that happens to you on a daily basis, because we don’t live in silos, but you can control how you respond and attend to them. Maintaining a positive mindset, which means not allowing things to get to us so badly, is one way to stay happy and alive.

My predisposition is that if I had the power to control it, it wouldn’t have happened in the first place. All I can do is to embrace it and move on from there. I know people will say, “Is it that easy?” Some will say you are not in my shoes, or you can’t relate. You are right; I might not be in your shoes, but why wallow in self-pity? It leads nowhere.

Still, you can be happy, practice self-compassion, breathe deeply, and do what you enjoy—sing, dance, or play. Focus on past wins rather than current problems.

Meaningful Living

Awards, certifications, and the next big wins, like owning five corporate businesses, building your own house, or buying the latest car, are good, but do you let these things define you?  The big answer is no.

We should try to get a deeper understanding of what we are meant to do in life. Live it. Having a deeper meaning in life helps us value what truly matters and define our self-worth not in terms of wealth but in terms of what truly matters, like gratitude, compassion, meditation, and other personal  purposes or drives.

Purposeful living brings calmness, acceptance, resilience, and grace in facing challenges.

Human Support

Is it relieving to say that we all go through our trying times? For some, it is longer, while for others it is a relatively short period of time. Hence, we need each other as we journey through life.

Spending time with friends and family brings happiness and eases burdens. Ask for help—friends, family, mentors, or counselors can support you. It strengthens us and provides a better perspective when we tackle our pressures or fears.

I remembered that after I had my first C-section, I could not lift my body for the first 24 hours. The next day, the nurse, my husband, and my mom sang and encouraged me, which helped me overcome that challenge. I really appreciate them, as I might not have gone through this time alone without them.

Healthy Lifestyle

It is important to know that life isn’t that deep, and we were created to enjoy it. Maintaining a great work-life balance is important; get to work and leave at the right times. I know there might be days of exception, but don’t make it the new normal. There is a reason why the employee stated the need for lunch breaks; please take it. Life is not all about impressing your boss or supervisor.

Do you spend your leave relaxing, or do you take your vacation at job A and then go to job B? There is a need to rest, relax, reflect, and participate in recreational activities that not just boost your mood but also revitalize your well-being.

Set realistic goals to reduce overwhelm. For example, aiming for large, sudden leaps in business earnings can lead to unhealthy strain.

Pressure as it affects the mind

Eat well and Drink Water

Fasting is good, but eating well is also critical. Food is a fuel for the body. When you are not fasting, what do you eat? Is it food to fuel, food to fill, or food to satisfy our craving?

Paying attention to the food we eat goes a long way toward determining how our bodies react when the pressures come. Some food helps us face these pressures with resilience, and some even sells us out for confusion before the pressures come.

Drinking water is equally important, as it keeps us hydrated and helps ensure that our blood and nerves function properly.

Sleep

We were created to sleep. Yes, sleep is essential. Without it, our hormones, cravings, and mental health suffer. Sleep restores clarity, alertness, and energy. I do not recommend a night shift, as it completely distorts our routines and even our way of living. Sleep also helps boost our mood and provides us with a more positive outlook on life, making us more stable and smarter.

Not sleeping well is poor, so is excessive sleep. Adults should sleep 7–8 hours daily to ensure productivity and drive a better wellbeing.

Conclusion

Staying on top of pressure by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising, staying mindful, eating and drinking well, and staying positive goes a long way toward ensuring we are healthier, more resilient, and better able to cope with the various obstacles that come our way.

Proper pressure management helps us feel less frustrated, worried, anxious, or irritated about our current situation; focus more on solutions than regrets; and avoid feeling overwhelmed, thereby providing a better, more mindful, and healthier life for all.
